Chief of Naval Staff:
 Admiral Bernard ROGEL

Admiral Bernard Rogel joined the Naval academy in 1976.

 

Upon completion of various assignments to SSNs and SSBNs, he graduated from the atomic school in Cherbourg.

From 1990 to 1992, he was successively commanding officer SSN Casabianca (blue crew) and Saphir (red crew) and carried out all type of missions devoted to SSNs.

 

He then became officer, training and naval tactics in the Mediterranean submarine squadron. He was in charge of SSN CO and crew training and qualification, equipment testing and of the development of naval tactics as well as sub operations..

 

He graduated from the Joint Staff College in Paris in 1994.

He was then assigned to the anti-submarine destroyer Tourville as executive officer. In 1996, he was assigned to the SSBN Indomptable as executive officer.

 

From January 1998 to April 2000, he served as advisor to the executive assistant of the Chief of defence staff.

From April 2000 to December 2001, he was commanding officer, SSBN Inflexible (blue crew) and accomplished two operational patrols.

On January 5, 2002, he joined the submarine command where he was assigned as head of the operations division, then Chief of staff.

For September 2003 to June 2004, he graduated from the High defence studies college and High military studies college in Paris.

In September 2004, he was assigned to the President's private office as deputy chief of staff.

He was in charge of nuclear and naval affairs, as well as military out-of-area operations.

From September 2006 to August 2009, he was executive assistant to the Chief of defence staff.

On September the 12th, 2011 he became Chief of naval staff.

 

VADM Bernard Rogel is married to Christine and has three sons.

He has accomplished 27,000 hours undersea.

He holds various decorations including commander in the Legion of Honor and commander in the Order of Merit, and has been awarded the Defence Medal with submarine commendation.
